You can’t control the past or the future, all you can control is Right Now.
Right Now is all you should worry about. Clear your mind of all distractions. You’ll find that almost all distractions are not “Right Now distractions”. They are often a replay of a conversation or something you should have done – ie “past distractions” – or things you need to do, people you need to talk to, errands to run – ie “future distractions”.
The power of focus is focusing on the Right Now. Take a few deep breaths and clear your mind so you can be totally present in whatever it is that you’re doing.
The greatest enjoyment in life is through being totally present and enjoying the moment. Sunsets become more brilliant, relationships deeper, learning easier, work more efficient. Heck even food becomes tastier if you savour the moment.
Conversely, not focusing on the Right Now is extremely destructive. How many relationships end because one person wasn’t paying enough attention to the other? How many people have failed exams or not got the mark they should have simply because they were thinking of other things at the time? There’s been a number of studies linking obesity to “thoughtless eating” – people eating way more than they need because they were not thinking about what they put in their mouths.
How much natural beauty have you missed because you were stressing over something else, even if you were supposedly watching a sunset? How much beauty have you missed in people because you were distracted. How much enjoyment in life have you missed because your mind was focused on the past or the future?
You can’t control the past or future, so just focus on Right Now.
Sure take time to plan for the future, dream of a better tomorrow, or learn from your past mistakes and successes, but spend the bulk of your time in the Right Now.
Right Now is all that matters.
